A Long Night
Normally putting the kids to bed is a team sport. We give them a bath, then Sarah starts with Alice and I take over after she’s nursed. I start with Porter, putting him in his PJ’s, trying to wind him down and reading him a book. Then we switch. Once Alice is asleep, if Porter’s not asleep yet (which is not uncommon) then we switch again and I try to put the finishing touch on getting him to sleep. But all that goes out the window when one of us isn’t here, like now that Sarah’s in NYC. Both kids napped from 4:30 until 5:30 (Alice) and almost 6 (Porter) which did not bode well. I gave Alice her bath on time but she would not go to sleep. Grandpa took Porter over to the mall for Pizza while I tried to get Alice to sleep. By the time they returned at 8, she was still awake and I put her in the swing. Porter was still very much not tired so he stayed up with me until after 9, when we finally trooped up to bed. At first I was going to not give him a bath hoping that might induce him to sleep (since his bath is often a traumatic experience), but once the lights were out and he still wasn’t in a sleeping mood he asked for a bath. I assume he thought it would prolong the time he wasn’t in bed. Anyway, we had a bath at almost 10. He finally drifted off around 10:30. I say around because I fell asleep in his bed (probably before Porter did) and woke again at almost 11. So much for a quiet night to myself.

Smirking with the knowledge that he got to stay up a little bit longer.
