About Us

Welcome to the Brookston family blog. We'll post updates here on what's going on in our part of the world, and especially with our son, Porter, who has been diagnosed with some form of autism. Our hope is that this blog will help us deal with all the issues we'll be facing and keep our friends and family informed as well.

Ms. Liza

Categories: News, Photos, Porter — J @ 5:15 pm

Day two at Abbey Montessori began about the same as on Tuesday, with Porter being somewhat upset. But also like Tuesday, when I picked him up this afternoon he seemed very content and happy. His teacher, Ms. Liza, was telling me tales of him willingly participating in circle time, learning about the different kinds of apples (he prefers the Granny Smith over Delicious), and discovering the joys of lollipops. Porter was very close with Ms. Liza before and he seems to have quickly fallen back in her good graces. She told me he seems to recognize many of the students from a year ago, even if he doesn’t know their names (which is no surprise, since he didn’t ever know them).

Ms. Liza and Porter, looking a little lollipop drunk. The red lips Porter’s showing are from the cherry lollipop he just finished. He was in the process of selecting a green apple lollipop as I arrived. You can see he’s still holding it in his hand.

Scaring the Kids

Categories: Photos, Humor, Alice — J @ 10:32 am

Alright maybe it’s just me but these things look just a little too creepy for my tastes. That they were built for kids to play on seems strange. Although to be fair, Alice seems oblivious to their menacing appearance.

What the hell is this? It’s not a cute colorful butterfly. A moth perhaps? And what’s it sitting on, a dung heap? It is face down in a pile of shit? Is it dead? Gross.

And I don’t like the look this red frog (are there red frogs?) is giving Alice. He looks like he’s about to pounce on her. Couldn’t they at least have put a smile on his face? And what’s with the angry camouflage colored, bloodshot eyeballs? Is he going to eat her? “Run Alice! Don’t look back, just run!

Zoo Trip

Categories: Photos, Porter, Alice, Family — J @ 9:31 am

The kids went to the Oakland Zoo yesterday with Grandma and Grandpa. Naturally the rides were as exciting to them as the animals.

Alice looking adorable.

Porter practices his driving skills. Only twelve more years until he can drive.
