About Us

Welcome to the Brookston family blog. We'll post updates here on what's going on in our part of the world, and especially with our son, Porter, who has been diagnosed with some form of autism. Our hope is that this blog will help us deal with all the issues we'll be facing and keep our friends and family informed as well.

Friday Night at Falling Rock

Categories: Photos, J, Friends, Beer — J @ 11:58 pm

Deja Vu. After the session, we again wound up at Falling Rock where yet more yummy beers were consumed.

Dick Cantwell, co-owner of Elysian Brewing Co. in Seattle, and Fred Bowman, co-founder of Portland Brewing Co.

Falling Rock owner Chris Black and Celebrator publisher Tom Dalldorf.

Moon River brewer John Pinkston gets showered with hops at the “Me So Hoppy Lupulin Slam.”

Meanwhile, Back in Sunny California

Categories: Photos, Porter, Alice, Family — J @ 11:20 pm

Sarah took the kids to her Mom and Dad’s on Saturday so she could rest her toe and they could have fun with the non-gimpy members of the family.

Grandma made pancakes but Porter insisted on smothering them with ketchup.

Alice and Porter enjoy the new hot tub with Grandma.

Grandpa and Grandma set up Porter’s new slot car racing set. This set is somewhat different, however. You have to skake the cars to make them go.

Friday Night at the Hall

Categories: Photos, J, Friends, Beer — J @ 10:03 pm

Friday night at the festival was, as usual, more crowded than Thursday. But there were still plenty of beer people there to make it worthwhile. And you could still get around without too many traffic jams.

Garret Oliver, head brewer at Brooklyn Brewery, and chef Bruce Paton, from Cathedral Hill in San Francisco, put on a food and beer cooking demonstration.

The gang from Bull & Bush Brewery always make quite an entrance.

Each session begins with bagpipes.

From left; beer writer Fred Eckhardt, “Crazy Dave” Heist, owner of HopTown Brewing Co. in Pleasanton, California, homebrewing enthusiast Kate and her boyfriend.

Tom Peters, co-owner of Monk’s Cafe in Philadelphia, and me.

Me and Michael Jackson, the most well-known beer writer in the world. Michael also writes The Beer Hunter.

Ron Jeffries, owner of Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales in Michigan. This is one of my favorite new breweries.

Shaun O’Sullivan, co-owner of 21st Amendment Brewery & Restaurant in San Francisco, Melissa Myers of Drake’s Brewing Co., and Dave McLean, owner of Magnolia Pub & Brewery, also in San Francisco.

Britt Antrim and Rich Tucciarone, brewers at Kona Brewing Co. in Hawaii.

The Friday night crowd at last call.

Alice’s First Popsicle

Categories: Photos, Alice — J @ 5:37 pm

Friday was apparently a very hot day so Sarah promised Porter a popsicle when he got home from school. Alice was miffed that Porter wouldn’t share his popsicle with her, so Sarah gave Alice her very own popsicle.

Alice enjoys her first popsicle.

Thursday Night at Falling Rock

Categories: Photos, J, Friends, Beer — J @ 4:37 pm

After the session, we naturally gravitated toward Falling Rock where many more yummy beers were consumed.

Melissa Myers and Rodger Davis (my roomies) from Drake’s Brewing Co. in San Leandro, California.

Fellow Celebrator writer Abe Goldman-Armstrong (who I called Bruce all evening for reasons passing understanding) and Michael Cornerton, an Irish brewer who works for Mathilda Bay Brewing in Australia.

Chris Black, owner of the Falling Rock, and me just as the bar was closing. Can you tell we’ve been drinking?
