About Us

Welcome to the Brookston family blog. We'll post updates here on what's going on in our part of the world, and especially with our son, Porter, who has been diagnosed with some form of autism. Our hope is that this blog will help us deal with all the issues we'll be facing and keep our friends and family informed as well.

Porter Elliot

Categories: Photos, Porter — J @ 2:43 pm

As John Belushi’s old man character said, in an early SNL skit explaining why he outlived the rest of the cast, “cause I’m a dancer” as he began dancing around a snow covered cemetary. Well that’s Porter, apparently. This photograph came home with Porter today in his backpack, but without explanation. So I’m not sure what’s going on with him. Is he taking dance lessons behind our back ala Billy Elliot?

I’m a dancer!

One Year Evaluation

Categories: News, Porter, Autism — J @ 1:38 pm

It’s hard to believe, but it’s been almost a year since Porter’s first I.E.P. where his goals for the year were set down. We just got the permission forms for another I.E.P., this one examining his progress over the past year and also setting goals for the coming year. I don’t know why, but I’m a little nervous about it but I know he’s made a lot of progress so I’m sure there’s no cause for worry. I’ll let everybody know when the I.E.P. will take place.

I’m not sure why this one called out to me this morning, it just made me laugh.

Favorite Tree

Categories: Photos, Porter — J @ 9:27 am

This morning while we wanted for the school bus to arrive, Porter kept insisting I put him in this particular tree next to the fire hydrant. What it was about this tree, I have no idea, but this was the one, apparently. It didn’t seem to matter that there was no way I could have lifted him up into the tree.

Porter point to his “special” tree.

The morning sun bleached his face in all the photos of Porter in front of his tree, so I fooled around with Photoshop to give it a different look.
