About Us

Welcome to the Brookston family blog. We'll post updates here on what's going on in our part of the world, and especially with our son, Porter, who has been diagnosed with some form of autism. Our hope is that this blog will help us deal with all the issues we'll be facing and keep our friends and family informed as well.

O.T. is O.K. Again

Categories: News, Photos, Porter, Sarah — J @ 3:34 pm

After weeks and months of Porter pitching a fit about going to his weekly occupational therapy sessions, he’s finally started to go to them again without protest and even with enthusiasm. For the second week in a row he was happy about going.

I think it’s safe to say Sarah’s scheme to help Porter with transitions has been a marvelous success. Each night before bed and again in the morning, we tell Porter about the three things he will do the next day. For example, today it was 1. school, 2. Theresa’s (O.T.), and 3. treat. If he doesn’t have a third thing scheduled, number three is always a treat so we can keep it to three things for each day. Today’s treat was taking him and Alice to the park for a picnic.

It Takes Balls

Categories: Photos, Alice — J @ 1:05 pm

Sarah worked from home today and I dropped her off downtown while she had her hair done. She then walked over and met us at Porter’s Occupational Therapy, which was only a few blocks away. She and Alice waited with me in the sitting room … or is that sat with me in the waiting room?

Alice was quite taken with this toy where you dropped a ball down a tube and it rattled through a noisy series of slides before dropping to the ground.

She did it over and over again and laughed and laughed.

In the Closet

Categories: Photos, Alice — J @ 12:05 pm

Alice was playing in the bedroom this morning, going in and out of the closet with a Red Hook snowglobe (that’s what she’s holding in her hand).

I’m in. I’m out. I’m in. I’m out.

Smurfs Massacred by Bomb Attack!

Categories: News, Movies — J @ 10:33 am

I knew I loved the U.N. I always thought any organization that’s vehemently hated by republicans and libertarians can’t be all bad. But this is just perfect. As reported in Britain’s Telegraph, with the permission and cooperation of the family and estate of Peyo, the creator of the Smurfs, UNICEF has made a short animated film in which the Smurfs’ village is decimated by a bomb attack. The anti-war short will debut in Belgium next week where it’s goal is to make war less glorified, a mission I wholeheartedly support. I can just hear the howls from both sides of the fake mainstream political spectrum. Papa Smurf can lick my %#@. (Extra points if you know that reference). Sadly, the film itself is not yet online.
