About Us

Welcome to the Brookston family blog. We'll post updates here on what's going on in our part of the world, and especially with our son, Porter, who has been diagnosed with some form of autism. Our hope is that this blog will help us deal with all the issues we'll be facing and keep our friends and family informed as well.

Back to the Track

Categories: Photos, Porter — J @ 3:06 pm

As at least one of you has pointed out (thanks, Christi!) that Porter has not been playing with his trains very much these days. In fact it’s been several months since he’s made a train layout. Well that ended last night as he inexplicably decided it was time to “play trains.” So we went upstairs to his room and proceeded to make a small layout on his train table.

I’m Not Happy

Categories: News, Photos, Porter — J @ 8:43 am

If you’ve been around Porter the past two or three days, you’ve heard that he’s unhappy. He’s been saying “I’m not happy” a lot recently, although he’s using the phrase interchangeably for mad, sad and frustrated. The good news is he’s starting to verbalize these emotions instead of the non-verbal equivilents such as hitting, tantrums and meltdowns. So it’s definitely welcome progess. But I must say I wish he’d use it a bit more sparingly. He’s giving us the impression he’s not really happy about anything right now though clearly that’s not the case. This too, I imagine, will pass. In the meantime, he’ll continue to remind me that “I’m not happy, Daddyad infinitum.

Waiting for the bus this morning. “I’m not happy!

Don’t Feed the Ducks … French Fries

Categories: Photos, Porter — J @ 6:53 am

After O.T., we took the kids to the park for a picnic. Porter decided he wanted to feed the ducks but we didn’t have any bread. Not one to be deterred, he fed them his remaining french fries. I’m not sure if ducks and geese like french fries, but they certainly wnet for them with their usual enthusiastic abandon.

Here ducks, have a french fry!

Hey! Eat my fries!

“Well, I guess I can have just one more.”
