About Us

Welcome to the Brookston family blog. We'll post updates here on what's going on in our part of the world, and especially with our son, Porter, who has been diagnosed with some form of autism. Our hope is that this blog will help us deal with all the issues we'll be facing and keep our friends and family informed as well.

My Fry Gal

Categories: Photos, Alice, Food — J @ 3:05 pm

Instead of pizza, we went to one of our favorite restaurants downtown, Theresa & Johnny’s Comfort Food. Porter delighted in their yummy fries and then Alice started stealing them from him.

Walking Downtown

Categories: Photos, Alice, Sarah — J @ 2:35 pm

After their haircuts we tried to take the kids out for pizza but the joint was closed. But it was still nice outside so we went downtown and walked the main street for a few minutes before stopping for lunch at one of our favorite places.

Alice Accessorizes

Categories: Photos, Alice — J @ 2:15 pm

While Porter was getting his hair cut, Alice found a string of purple beads that matched her outfit perfectly. She kept putting them on an taking them off, trying to get the look just right.

Haircut with Gordon

Categories: Photos, Porter — J @ 2:05 pm

After Alice’s first haircut, it was time for Porter to have his hair cut. Although he wasn’t too happy about and he kept telling the barber “that’s enough,” he still sat without squriming and wriggling out of the chair and for the second time, he didn’t sit on my lap to have his hair cut. He held one of his favorite trains, Gordon, while Eddie gave him his haircut. So all in all, he did exceptionally well again.

Still not too happy about his haircut.

But he did sit still, at least.

And even joked with Mommy.

Alice’s First Haircut

Categories: Events, Photos, Alice, Sarah — J @ 1:45 pm

Today Alice had her first haircut. We didn’t have much cut, we just wanted to start evening it out. She was a trooper and sat on Sarah’s lap for her haircut. She squirmed and wiggled a bit but otherwise did a great job for her first time with no crying or fussing, at least.

Hey, this is no big deal.

Cute and Nappy

Categories: Photos, Porter — J @ 12:05 pm

A little before it was time to go for Porter’s haircut he professed to feeling tired and wanting to take a nap. Personally, I think it was a ploy to avoid a haircut which he was none too happy about. So he played in the bed for a little while hoping to stall the inevitable.

No, Dad, I’m not faking. I’m really, really tired.

You don’t believe this face?

Look, I’m yawning.

Alright, maybe I’m fibbing just a little bit.

Bathing Beauties

While Sarah was out taking care of some errands, I gave the kids their bath. They had a quick bath and were just looking adorable to me, but then I’m just a little biased.

Say It, Don’t Spray It

Categories: Photos, Porter, Alice — J @ 1:54 pm

Alice has learned to make a raspberry and will happily spray for minutes at a time. Porter has also picked up the habit again, and often joins in on the spraying. So when an episode of Kipper today featured all the characters imitaing a boat motor sound, the kids enthusiastically joined in and ran around the room like motor boats spraying up water in their wake.

The Casual Artist

While Porter or his clone put away his track, Alice watched the Wiggles and drew on her Doddle Pro. She wasn’t even looking at what she was drawing, that’s how confident her art has become.

Multi-tasking again.

Cleaning Up, Or Who Stole My Son?

Categories: Photos, Porter — J @ 10:29 am

At some point this morning, Porter announced that he wanted — that’s wanted mind you — to clean up his blue track layout in the living room. And he proceeded to do just that. He got out the boxes and dismantled the track. He put every bit of the track, the engines and cars, and the buildings away. He even took apart the tunnel so that it fit back in the box. It was amazing. The only remaining question is who is this child?

Our Little Climber Strikes Again

Categories: Photos, Alice, Food — J @ 8:19 am

The three of us eventually share a corn muffin this morning. First Porter nibbled a bit on it and then I gave Alice a few small bites. But that didn’t satisfy her. She wanted the whole thing. History has taught me that if I had given in the whole corn muffin would have been strewn around the room in tiny little pieces and I would have had to drag out the vacuum cleaner. So I put it on the dining table out of her reach. Or so I thought. Next thing I knew she had somehow climbed up on top of the table in order to get to the muffin. So I ate the muffin to difuse the situation.

The Last Friday Morning of 2005

I wish I could say this sunrise greeted us as I came downstairs with the kids this morning, but it was another grey, rainy day in Marin.

See Ya Soon

Categories: Photos, Porter — J @ 6:45 pm

Before the kids were asleep, as usual, once Alice was in her pajamas she came into Porter’s room to say goodnight to her big brother and her Mommy. Porter, instead of his usual “goodnight Alice” and the ocassional kiss or hug goodnight, tonight added “see you soon!”

Before returning to the book he was reading to Mommy.

Kisses for My Mommy

Categories: Photos, Alice, Sarah — J @ 3:39 pm

The kids spent the night at their grandparents last night so we got our first chance to sleep in togther in many a moon. It was blissful. We got at a liersurely pace, went out for an intimate breakfast and saw a matinee of “Walk the Line.” (It was great, BTW). After that, we drove to Cotati to pick up Porter and Alice. They were as happy to see us as we were to be reunited with them. Alice was particularly happy to see her Mommy.

Happy to back in Mommy’s arms.

But first she checked her mouth to make sure it really was Sarah and not some doppelganger.

Satisfied it was indeed her Mommy, she rewarded Sarah with a head massage.

And then a big kiss.
