About Us

Welcome to the Brookston family blog. We'll post updates here on what's going on in our part of the world, and especially with our son, Porter, who has been diagnosed with some form of autism. Our hope is that this blog will help us deal with all the issues we'll be facing and keep our friends and family informed as well.

Fixing Trains

Categories: Photos, Porter, Alice, Friends — J @ 5:10 pm

When I picked up Porter from Montessori, he was in Ms. Liza’s office trying to make her Christmas train work. It had gotten snow (okay, fake cotton snow) stuck in it’s wheel and as a result it wouldn’t go. I took over fix-it duties and got it running again.

Meanwhile, Alice was working on her penmanship again on Ms. Liza’s desk.

Lunchtime with the Gang

Categories: Photos, Porter, Food — J @ 1:22 pm

Lunchtime was just beginning when I dropped Porter off at his Montessori school today. I hung around just long enough to watch him get situated and open his lunch, then Alice and I hightailed it out of there.

Porter opens his lunch to reveal — drum roll, please — chicken dinosaurs.

The Future’s So Bright …

Categories: Photos, Alice — J @ 10:45 am

We usually keep a backpack at the ready with essentials for the kids to make it easier to go out on short notice. It includes such items as hats, sunscreen and sunglasses. Well, we don’t need any of those items over the winter so we pulled them out and they’re currently on the kitchen table. Alice decided it was too sunny basking in the glow of the fluorescent lights.

The future’s so bright, I gotta’ wear shades!

I wonder what the dull people are doing today?

Too cool for school, that’s why I don’t go.

Photo Tag

Categories: Photos, Porter — J @ 9:09 am

I may have cracked the no photos mantra that Porter always adopts whenever I pull out the camera. We were waiting for his bus this morning and it was actually cold outside (there was even frost) and the bus was taking a long time to arrive [actually it never arrived, it was in a minor accident but everyone was fine] and I was trying to make up some games to keep us warm and occupied. We played “photo tag” around the mail box where Porter would hide from the camera behind the mail box and I would jump around the corner and try to snap his picture. Then he’d dart around to the other side and I’d fake left and go right around the box meeting him for another photo opportunity. We played this game quite a while and see if you tell from the “tag” photos whether or not he was finally enjoying himself having his picture taken.

Tag, you’re it!

You’re it. You’re it again.

And again. And again.
