About Us

Welcome to the Brookston family blog. We'll post updates here on what's going on in our part of the world, and especially with our son, Porter, who has been diagnosed with some form of autism. Our hope is that this blog will help us deal with all the issues we'll be facing and keep our friends and family informed as well.

Franks & Beans

Categories: Photos, Alice, Food — J @ 6:23 pm

For dinner this evening, I made franks and beans, but used “smart dogs” for Sarah since she’s still a karmic vegetarian for a little while longer. We made Porter try three spoonfuls of baked beans and you would have thought we were trying to poison him, he put up such a fuss. But at least he managed to keep them down. Sarah, on the other hand, spit out her smart dogs on her plate. I guess they weren’t that smart after all.

Alice decided her beans were still a little too hot, so she sprinkled some water on them to cool them down.

But unlike Porter, she seemed to enjoy her first taste of baked beans.

Take Down

After we picked Sarah up from the ferry boat and got her safely home, Alice decided to go on attack mode and knocked her over again.

You’re going down, Mommy! I’m going to pin you.

Bagel Dog Day Afternoon

Categories: Photos, Porter, Food — J @ 1:15 pm

It was lunchtime again when we arrived at Porter’s Montessori this afternoon. On the menu today was a PB&J and Bagel Dogs with a side of ketchup. Umm, umm good.

Porter talks to his peeps around his table, with his lunch behind him.

Porter uses James to illustrate the finer points of being a very useful engine.

Tag Tuesday

Categories: News, Photos, Porter — J @ 11:38 am

This morning at the bus stop, Porter and I played photo tag again.

Gotcha. Gotcha again!

On this last photo, notice how Porter is biting his lower lip. I finally caught this on film. If you look closely at his photos over the past few weeks, you’ll notice there’s a mark on his upper and lower lip. It looks sort of like a rash or a ketchup ring. But it’s from him constantly biting his lip. I don’t know why he’s started doing it or how to get him to stop, but I’m open to suggestions.

Up Early

Categories: Photos, Porter, Alice — J @ 8:23 am

I could not seem to drag my sorry ass out of bed this morning to take Sarah to the ferry. And while Porter was up to see dawn crack, Alice also seemed to have a hard time waking up. Now that’s Daddy’s little girl!

Porter plays with Stepney and Arthur, two trains in the Thomas universe at the crack of dawn.

Alice seems to be saying “it’s too damn early.
