About Us

Welcome to the Brookston family blog. We'll post updates here on what's going on in our part of the world, and especially with our son, Porter, who has been diagnosed with some form of autism. Our hope is that this blog will help us deal with all the issues we'll be facing and keep our friends and family informed as well.

Alice Chooses

Categories: Photos, Alice — J @ 4:44 pm

We’ve been trying to instll the idea of taking turns on the kids, especially Porter, by watching a video of Porter’s choosing followed by one Alice picked and so on. Lately, Porter has been choosing Thomas or train videos and Alice overwhelingly picks Wiggles videos. She seems to really love the Wiggles, and today was no exception.

I choose the Wiggles.

You got a problem with that?

Teddy the Muse

While Porter played with his new Thomas trains, Alice colored with her crayons on the sofa. Her teddy bear seemed to act as her muse.

Hmm. Alright Teddy, what shall I write?

Ah yes, that’s it. Thanks Teddy.

Perhaps if I nibble on this crayon I’ll be inspired.

Eureka! I got it. Thanks again Teddy!

Tomy Toys

Porter’s grandparents picked up for Porter a new kind of Thomas train set, this was made by Tomy. The trains are plastic and slightly larger than the wooden ones, but surprisingly they actually fit on the wooden track. The track for the Tomy Thomas is blue plastic and they’re reversable, which is pretty useful. The engines are all motorized and run on the track. Naturally, there’s tons of accessories you can buy but so far all Porter has is a number of engines and cars and some blue track.

Porter puts Thomas and the Jet Engine on the track. Meanwhile Spencer lurks behind him on the oval track.

Spencer chuffs through a tunnel.

Seeing Into the Future

Categories: Photos, Porter — J @ 2:59 pm

After shopping most of the day trying desperately to get ready for Sunday, we finally made it home late this afternoon. That’s why there has been so few posts today. Sorry about that. I’ll do better tomorrow.

Anyway, Porter tried to use a roll of wrapping paper as a telescope. Personally I think he was hoping he could see what presents Santa was going to bring him by looking through the wrapping paper telescope.

What’s Santa bringing me?

Walking a Mile in Your Shoes

Categories: Photos, Porter — J @ 6:26 am

Porter decided he wanted to know what it was like to be Daddy so he tried to walk a mile in my shoes. He got pretty far, actually, making it all the way around the sofa and table in the living room.

Look Daddy! Big shoes, big heart.

See, I can do it, too.

Balance is the key.
