About Us

Welcome to the Brookston family blog. We'll post updates here on what's going on in our part of the world, and especially with our son, Porter, who has been diagnosed with some form of autism. Our hope is that this blog will help us deal with all the issues we'll be facing and keep our friends and family informed as well.

Funny Factoids

Categories: Humor — J @ 4:25 pm

My sister-in-law Cyndi sent around this collection of funny factoids with even funnier commentary.

  1. If you yelled for 8 years, 7 months and 6 days you would have produced enough sound energy to heat one cup of coffee.
    (Hardly seems worth it.)
  2. If you farted consistently for 6 years and 9 months, enough gas is produced to create the energy of an atomic bomb.
    (Now that’s more like it!)
  3. The human heart creates enough pressure when it pumps out to the body to squirt blood 30 feet.
    (O.M.G.!)
  4. A pig’s orgasm lasts 30 minutes.
(In my next life, I want to be a pig.)
  5. A cockroach will live nine days without its head before it starves to death! (Creepy.)
(I’m still not over the pig.)
  6. Banging your head against a wall uses 150 calories an hour
(Don’t try this at home, maybe at work.)
  7. The male praying mantis cannot copulate while its head is attached to its body. The female initiates sex by ripping the male’s head off.
    (“Honey, I’m home. What the….?!”)
  8. The flea can jump 350 times its body length. It’s like a human jumping the length of a football field.
(30 minutes..lucky pig! Can you imagine?)
  9. The catfish has over 27,000 taste buds.
(What could be so tasty on the bottom of a pond?)
  10. Some lions mate over 50 times a day.
(I still want to be a pig in my next life…quality over quantity)
  11. Butterflies taste with their feet.
(Something I always wanted to know.)
  12. The strongest muscle in the body is the tongue.
    (Hmmmmmm……)
  13. Right-handed people live, on average, nine years longer than left-handed people.
(If you’re ambidextrous, do you split the difference?)
  14. Elephants are the only animals that cannot jump.
(Okay, so that would be a good thing?)
  15. A cat’s urine glows under a black light.
(I wonder who was paid to figure that out? Sadly, we have a black light for just this purpose.)
  16. An ostrich’s eye is bigger than its brain.
(I know some people like that.)
  17. Starfish have no brains.
(I know some people like that too.)
  18. Polar bears are left-handed.
(If they switch, they’ll live a lot longer)
  19. Humans and dolphins are the only species that have sex for pleasure.
    (What about that pig??)

Here Kitty Kitty

Categories: Photos, Alice — J @ 3:21 pm

Alice got a number of new outfits from Grandma, who went on something of a shopping spree last week. Today she wore her kitty kitty outfit. I think she looked cute as a button, but then I think I’m just a little biased.

Cute as a kitty.

Here kitty kitty.

Aw, shucks. Stop that, Daddy. You’re embarrassing me.

The Unhappy Mixed-Up Routine

Categories: News, Photos, Porter — J @ 1:30 pm

Yesterday instead of going to Montessori, which Porter normally does on Tuesdays, we went to his dentist appointment. Today he usually gos to his Occupational Therapy. But today his therapist had to cancel because she was sick. So I thought he might like to go to his Montessori since he missed that yesterday. Boy, was I wrong. He cried real tears when we showed up at Montessori. I think his routine was just too discombobulated. Anyway, he was very unhappy when I left. Hopefully, once he settles into his routine of being there, he’ll be fine and bounce back. He often does start out unhappy and by the end of the day doesn’t want to leave whereever he’s at. At least I hope so.

Caught Wiggling

Categories: Photos, Alice — J @ 11:16 am

Alice loves to push buttons, but then who doesn’t. Today she figured out, presumably quite by accident, how to turn on the television and get the Wiggles going on it.

Caught watching the Wiggles!

Perception of Self

Categories: Porter, Art — J @ 10:13 am

This self-portrait came home with Porter from school the other day. At least we think it’s a self-portrait. We’re not 100% sure but that’s what it appears to be. Anway, it’s certainly an interesting perspective to see Porter’s pwn perception of what he looks like.

Self-portrait.
