About Us

Welcome to the Brookston family blog. We'll post updates here on what's going on in our part of the world, and especially with our son, Porter, who has been diagnosed with some form of autism. Our hope is that this blog will help us deal with all the issues we'll be facing and keep our friends and family informed as well.

More Gianna

Categories: Photos, Friends — J @ 4:27 pm

Nikki’s new baby (how weird is that to say?) is home now, safe and sound. Here are a few more recent photographs of Gianna Lyn.

Shmare with … is that a baby in her arms?

Alice Under the Weather

Categories: News, Porter, Alice, Family — J @ 3:16 pm

Since yesterday Alice seems to be slipping in and out of a low grade fever, perhaps the onset of the flu. She’s been very fussy and then she seems fine but then the cycle repeats again. For example, she was fine yesterday afternoon but later the grandparents reported she was feeling poorly again and sacked out on the sofa with Grandpa for the afternoon. She was off during the night last night and this morning but now she seems fine.

Sacked out with Grandpa yesterday.

You Know You’re Living in 2006 When …

Categories: Humor — J @ 2:10 pm

Another gem from my sister-in-law Cyndi:

You Know You’re Living in 2006 When …

1. You accidentally enter your PIN on the microwave.

2. You haven’t played solitaire with real cards in years.

3. You have a list of 15 phone numbers to reach your family of 3.

4. You e-mail the person who works at the desk next to you.

5. Your reason for not staying in touch with friends and family is that they don’t have e-mail addresses.

6. You pull up in your own driveway and use your cell phone to see if anyone is home to help you carry in the groceries.

7. Every commercial on television has a web site at the bottom of the screen.

8. Leaving the house without your cell phone, which you didn’t even have the first 20 or 30 (or 60) years of your life, is now a cause for panic and you turn around to go and get it.

10. You get up in the morning and go on line before getting your coffee.

11. You start tilting your head sideways to smile. : )

12. You’re reading this and nodding and laughing.

13. Even worse, you know exactly to whom you are going to forward this message.

14. You are too busy to notice there was no #9 on this list.

15. You actually scrolled back up to check that there wasn’t a #9 on this list.

AND NOW U R LAUGHING at yourself.

Go on, forward this to your friends. You know you want to!

Cate the Hiker

Categories: Photos, Friends, Beer — J @ 12:58 pm

A friend of mine from the beer world, Tom, had a daughter a little over four years ago. I met her once at a Christmas party when she was around one, but I haven’t seen her since then nor have I seen Tom very often since then either. Anyway, we talked yesterday and there’s a chance we might be working together on a project in the next few months. He sent me a picture of his daughter and my has she grown since the last time I saw her.

Cate the adorable hiker.

Alice’s Two Hearts

Categories: Photos, Alice — J @ 10:27 am

Yesterday as Alice waited for Porter to get home from school, she was sporting a t-shirt featuring twin hearts (a gift from Sarah’s brother Dave and his wide Cyndi). She’d seemed to be feeling poorly earlier in the day but was apparently back in the pink as Grandma and Grandpa arrived.

Alice’s two hearts (three if you count that beating one).

Fly Daddy: Day 10

Categories: News, J — J @ 9:17 am

Today’s task is to use a timer and set it for 15 minutes. In that time I’m supposed to gather up as much trash as I can in that time period, which will be too easy since today is trash day and I gathered all of the trash last night. Then I’m supposed to re-set the time and put my feet up and read for another 15 minutes. Since the garbage is already gone, I guess I’ll use the 15 minutes to do put away as many toys as I can in that time period. Today’s “mission” is kind of a crack-up. Im supposed to put a photo of Sarah or the kids in the laundry room so that I can see it when I’m washing the clothes. This “allows [me] to see something pleasant when [I am] blessing the laundry.” Okay, I’m starrting to think the FlyLady may have had a little too much kool-aid. Blessing the laundry is a little too “new age” for my tastes. Maybe a picture of the cats in case we ever get any mice back there? But I do need to work on my Control Journal. Perhaps I’ll do that instead.
