About Us

Welcome to the Brookston family blog. We'll post updates here on what's going on in our part of the world, and especially with our son, Porter, who has been diagnosed with some form of autism. Our hope is that this blog will help us deal with all the issues we'll be facing and keep our friends and family informed as well.

Ridin’ the Silver Buggy

Categories: Photos, Alice, Food — J @ 3:36 pm

After we dropped Porter off for his stint in the joint (Montessori), we stopped by the food store for a few items I needed to pick up. Alice seemed very happy to be outside and was just in a great mood as we wheeled around the aisles.

She was patting on the cart like a drum. Notice the weird effect of her hand movement making it look slightly transparent.

Yea!

Goldfish is the New Cigarette

Categories: Photos, Humor, Porter, Food — J @ 2:16 pm

I should have know that the criminal element had moved in when they started wearing dark glasses. It seems the little cheesy cracker shaped like a goldish has surpassed the cigarette as the economic standard in the big house.

Safely locked in stir, Porter vies for respect by showing off his goldfish. The beginning of any period of internment is always tense. One false move, and you could end up being somebody’s butch. And nobody likes to be called Butch.

At the mere mention of goldfish, the inmates come out of the woodwork. What will happen next? It will determine Porter’s fate for the rest of his time in lockup.

Group Photo Phriday #1

Categories: History, Photos, Friends — J @ 11:59 am

While hunting through the pictures for the birthday project I keep coming upon these great group shots for between half a dozen and a gazillion people (that was for you Christi). But even though I could conceivably use them for a birthday post, generally there is no one person who is the foucus of the picture. I could use Christi’s wedding photo, for example, because it features Pat and Christi and since it’s generally considered to be the bride’s day (we just have to put on a tux, smile and say “I Do” anytime we’re asked a question) it made sense. But a tailgating photo or having brunch in Tahoe? Not so obvious. So I’ve decided to post one old group shot each week on Friday, which I’ll be calling Group Photo Phriday. I’ve got enough to keep me busy for a while, but if you’ve got some good ones, feel free to send them to me. You can never have too many photographs. So without further ado, here’s week one’s group picture:

This one had me howling. At Lynbrook High, clockwise from around two o’clock: Sean, John, Karen (love the hair color), Keith, Kristine, Sheldon, Lenny (didn’t know him) and Nikki, hiding in the middle.

P.S. — Karen has confessed to having given me color copies of these photographs.

Crayola Popsicles

Categories: Photos, Porter, Alice, Food — J @ 10:26 am

Did you know Crayola, the crayon people, also make popsicles? Or at least they license their name to someone who does. We normally get these fruit only popsicles but lately our pathetic grocery store stopped carrying them so we tried these instead. So far, both Porter and Alice seem to enjoy them.

Porter waving his popsicle while clutching his shuttle.

Alice taking a bite.

She seems to prefer holding it by the popsicle upside down rather than by the stick.

Whereas, Porter has accomplished stick work.

After their treat, they watched Toy Story.

Fly Daddy: Day 17

Categories: News, J — J @ 8:52 am

Day 17 brings another new age doozy to contemplate. FlyLady wants me to “think about what time you are going to bed each night.” I’m then supposed to pick a time and stick to it. Like that’s going to happen. Let’s see, I go to bed when I either a) pass out on the sofa, b) pass out on the kitchen table, c) am woken up by Sarah because I’ve passed out on either the sofa or table or, every once in a while, d) finish what I’m watching or doing and scrub the sink and come up to bed before I pass out on the sofa or table.
