About Us

Welcome to the Brookston family blog. We'll post updates here on what's going on in our part of the world, and especially with our son, Porter, who has been diagnosed with some form of autism. Our hope is that this blog will help us deal with all the issues we'll be facing and keep our friends and family informed as well.

Snoopy Airport

Categories: General — J @ 4:15 pm

Okay, technically it’s not really the Snoopy Airport but since he’s the only Peanuts character who flew planes, it might as well be. Porter’s been bugging us non-stop to go again to the airport and especially to see jets. None of that propeller nonsense for him. He “feels the need … the need for speed.” So his grandparents took him to the Charles M. Schulz Airport (fka the Sonoma County Airport), which is also the location of the Sonoma Jet Center. Unfortunately, there weren’t any scheduled flights when they were there but they did have an extensive gift shop, which seemed to be an adequate substitute. When he got home, Porter literally carried upstairs a box as big as he is full of airplanes, books and a snoopy pilot doll.

From the Window

Categories: Photos, Porter, Family — J @ 2:04 pm

When Porter arrived home from School on Monday, I was still upstairs getting Alice ready with Grandma. Grandpa waited outside for the bus to come. When Porter excitedly got off the school bus, he saw us waving from the window and hurried to greet us from below.

Porter sees us at the window.

But waits for Grandpa to catch up.

Economics and the Toddler

Categories: News, Humor, Porter — J @ 11:53 am

I want to get this out before I forget how it went. When Porter got home from school a few minutes ago, he was asking where his friend Mommy was and I explained. “She’s at work.” To which Porter replied. “What is she doing there?” So I explained. “She’s making money so we can buy you toys.” Figuring that might make some sense to him. And I guess it did, in a way, because his eyes widened and his face lit up. “Oh, toys!” He said excitedly. I then added. “But not just toys. Food and clothes, too.” I was about to keep going, adding more of the things money buys for our benefit, when he jumped in. “And books and socks, too.” “Yes, buddy, books and socks, too.” I told him approvingly. But he wasn’t finished demonstrating his understanding, because he continued. “And if we run out of money, then there’s no more books and no more socks and no more clothes and …” well you get the idea. So I guess he understands how the world works, after all.

Squirting Firehose

Categories: Photos, Porter — J @ 10:18 am

For some reason, Porter has been favoring his fire trucks lately and all things that have to do with fire-fighting. This includes a small hose which is part of one of his toys. He plays with it all the time, but in the bathtub it’s really something to see. Using a stone from a pirate ship toy attached to the fire hose he’s been able to shoot water some amazing heights and distances.

Thomas at Two

Jenny sent me this photo of her grandson Thomas, who is also Sheldon’s nephew, at his second birthday party today (or actually yesterday in that weird time warp that is) in Australia. I actually think he looks a lot like Jenny, don’t you?

One Glasses, Two Glasses, Red Glasses, Blue Glasses

Categories: Photos, Porter, Alice — J @ 8:21 am

More glasses fun took place on Sunday, while Sarah recuperated. This time, Alice pulled out the 3-d glasses from the Shrek 3-D DVD. Both Porter and Alice decided seeing the world in alternating red and blue would be fun.

Hey, what are these glasses?

Let’s put ‘em on!

Watching TV in three dimensions.

Running from the shark with the shopping cart.

3-D waving.

Okay, this is getting too weird for me.
