About Us

Welcome to the Brookston family blog. We'll post updates here on what's going on in our part of the world, and especially with our son, Porter, who has been diagnosed with some form of autism. Our hope is that this blog will help us deal with all the issues we'll be facing and keep our friends and family informed as well.

Alice Swings at Miller Park

Categories: Photos, Alice, Movies — J @ 5:56 pm

While we were at Miller Park on Saturday, Alice delighted in swinging in the swing. She would have stayed in the swing all day if we’d let her have her way.

Swinging on a star.

Wind in her hair.

Here’s a Quicktime movie of Alice swinging at Miller Park. You can either download the movie to your desktop or just click on the link to play it in your web browser (assuming your web browser has the quicktime plug-in installed).

The Green Circle

Categories: Photos, Alice — J @ 4:42 pm

While Alice was at the very top of the playground structure at Miller Creek Park, she kept peering down from porthole in the side. She played peek-a-boo with me on the ground.

I see you Daddy.

You can’t see me!

Where’d you go?

“Oh, there you are. Hi, Daddy!

Miller Creek Park, Part 2

Categories: Photos, Porter, Alice, Sarah, Friends — J @ 2:35 pm

There was a lot going on in the park, so I decided to split up the post into two parts. Here’s more photos from the kids’ time at Miller Creek Park.

Alice found a daffodil in the sandbox.

Which she smelled and carried around.

She climbed up the stairs to the top of the play structure.

Sarah and Alice take in the view of the creek.

Porter just hanging around.

Trying to climb up the pole.

Closer, closer.

Giving up and going to the other fireman’s pole.

Miller Creek Park & Porter’s First Birthday Party

Categories: Photos, Porter, Alice, Friends, Movies — J @ 1:02 pm

On Saturday, Porter attended his first birthday party (not including his own or family). It was for his friend Parker, who he’s known for around two years from Montessori. Parker turned four on April 1, no fooling. It was hld outdoors at Miller Creek Park, about five minutes from our house. We’d never actually been to the park before, but I’m pretty sure wel’ll be back. It was great fun.

The creek in Miller Creek, seen from the edge of the park where there’s a fence so the kids can’t fall in too easily.

It was a Madagascar themed birthday party and on Friday Parker sked me if I would bring Melman to the party, which I did. Here Melman stands watch on one of the benches. You can just make out Porter climbing a chain ladder in the background.

Coming out of the tube slide.

Gleefully running for all he’s worth.

Alice doing a bit of preliminary climbing.

Porter coming down the fireman’s pole.

Alice with her hands full of sand.

Porter reluctantly posing with Melman, his pet giraffe.

Here’s two Quicktime movies, one of Porter sliding down the fireman’s pole and banging his knee and the other sliding down the slide. You can either download the movie to your desktop or just click on the link to play it in your web browser (assuming your web browser has the quicktime plug-in installed).

Monday Morning Motivational #33

Categories: Humor — J @ 11:59 am

Given all the rain and very strong winds we’ve been getting this winter, this one made sense, especially as it’s raining cats and dogs as I write this.

Porter’s Photo Phunnies, Part 745

Categories: Photos, Porter, Alice, J, Sarah, Art — J @ 10:27 am

The camera is definitely in Porter’s mind again, as he wanted me to give him “his” camera again Saturday morning. These are some of the highlights of fifty or so pictures he took.

Melman naturally was the subject of many photos.

Including his freshly brushed mane.

Followed by a couple of abstract photographs emphasizing forms and blocks of color.

In this one, it almost looks like an angular Mondrian.

Then it was back to the mirror shots.

And close-up self portraits.

Although he also caught his “friend Mommy” on camera.

Who spent most of the weekend working so Porter could have new toys.

Porter’s “friend Daddy” after he’d just woken up and come downstairs.

Splashing Out Front

Categories: Photos, Alice, Movies — J @ 9:13 am

When we got home after picking up Porter from his Montessori on Friday, Alice discovered a small puddle just outside the garage door. Before I could say “boo” she was in the puddle and splashing.

Splashing in the puddle.

Which inspired her to work on some dance steps.

Here’s two Quicktime movies of Alice splishing and splashing in the little puddle and obviously working out her dance moves. You can either download the movie to your desktop or just click on the link to play it in your web browser (assuming your web browser has the quicktime plug-in installed).
