About Us

Welcome to the Brookston family blog. We'll post updates here on what's going on in our part of the world, and especially with our son, Porter, who has been diagnosed with some form of autism. Our hope is that this blog will help us deal with all the issues we'll be facing and keep our friends and family informed as well.

Alice’s Dirty Head

Categories: Photos, Alice — J @ 3:22 pm

Alice and Porter were playing in the living room when Alice came running into the kitchen with a head full of wet hair. When I asked Porter how Alice’s hair got wet, he replied that it was dirty and he thoughtfully hosed it down with the fire truck.

Alice’s wet head.

Apparently, it was dirty.

Teal and Red

Later that day, Alice tried to accessorize her teal outfit, but I’m not sure the red worked.

Double Ear Whammy

Categories: News, Porter, Alice — J @ 12:19 pm

Both Alice and Porter spent the weekend feeling sick and lounging around the house in misery. Oh, and not sleeping at night, either. I took them both to the doctor a little while ago and it turns out they each have an ear infection. And, oddly, in both cases it’s the left ear. Roll out the antibiotics.

Monday Morning Motivational #34

Categories: Humor — J @ 11:59 am

Since I’m going to be away all this week, starting tomorrow, at the Craft Brewers Conference, which is in Seattle this year, and will be in a lot of meetings, I thought this one was appropriate for how I anticipate my week will go.

Two Fire Hats

Categories: Photos, Porter, Alice — J @ 10:24 am

While Porter was playing with his new fire engine, Alice donned one of the fire chief hats we have and for some reason decided that Porter must wear one, too. But try as she might, she couldn’t quite seem to get Porter to willingly join her in wearing fire chief hats.

Alice approaches Porter with her offer of a fire chief hat.

Then tries to put it on him.

But he took it off and ran away, leaving her looking forlorn holding the other hat.

Luckily, that didn’t last long and she was smiling again in no time.

Fire Engine Day

Categories: News, Photos, Porter — J @ 9:04 am

Porter has been branching out lately, adding to his list of obsessions … er, interests. So far he loves trains, airplanes and spaceships. The new ones include fire engines and animals, specifically zoo animals and farm animals. He has many fire engines, and has for a while now. But with two new toys he’s gotten recently, his level of interest has skyrocketed. The first was Firehouse Tales, which I mentioned the week before last, and the second is a new fire engine that you can fill with water (in a reservoir in the base that you fill through a gas cap-like piece) and the you use the hose to put out fires by shooting water. It will shoot pretty far, in fact, probably something like 10-20 feet! Anyway, today’s theme will be some of the recent fire adventures with and because of his new fire engine.
