About Us

Welcome to the Brookston family blog. We'll post updates here on what's going on in our part of the world, and especially with our son, Porter, who has been diagnosed with some form of autism. Our hope is that this blog will help us deal with all the issues we'll be facing and keep our friends and family informed as well.

Happy Mother’s Day

Categories: News, Events, Photos, Porter, Alice, Sarah, Family — J @ 2:28 pm

Sunday, of course, was Mother’s Day and the kids pulled out all the stops to make sure their Mommy knew how much they loved her. Happy Mother’s Day, Sarah!

Sarah reading the note attached to the box with original artwork that Porter made for her at school.

Porter shwing Mommy how the lid works.

Sarah reading Porter’s first signature while Alice plays with the ribbon from her first present.

Sarah thanking Alice for the book she got her Mommy.

Porter actually signed Sarah’s card for her one letter at a time. The first three went fine but he had some trouble with the last three. Still, this was the first time he signed his own name by himself as far as I know.

Father and Son Ties

Apparently it wasn’t enough for Porter to wear a tie. He insisted that I wear one as, as well. I even let him pick out which tie I would wear. He chose the Winnie the Pooh tie.

Tying One On

Categories: Photos, Porter, J — J @ 10:19 am

When we went to Lyman’s 80th birthday party it was strictly adults only and are usual babysitters had always been family. So we had to get a regular, non-related babysitter for the very first time. I admit we were a little nervous about it since we’d never done it before. Happily, some of Porter’s instructors at his Montessori do babysitting on the side and Ms. Liza found us someone who was available. We felt much better knowing we were leaving the kids with someone the kids knew and since she brought her daughter along with her, Porter even had a familiar playmate to play with. When we said goodbye to the kids I was wearing a suit and tie. Apparently that image stuck with Porter because the next day he asked if he could put on a tie.

At least his fake smile is improving.
