About Us

Welcome to the Brookston family blog. We'll post updates here on what's going on in our part of the world, and especially with our son, Porter, who has been diagnosed with some form of autism. Our hope is that this blog will help us deal with all the issues we'll be facing and keep our friends and family informed as well.

Setting Up Camp

Categories: Porter, Alice, J, Sarah, Friends, Trips — J @ 1:15 pm

Eventually, we got down to the business of setting up camp and relaxing in the idyllic surroundings of Angel Island.

Alice arrives in camp and tries to unload the sleeping bags.

Later she sneaks into Gianna’s tent to give her a hug.

But eventually settles on a little lie-down with Mom, who has a fruity beverage in her hand.

Porter took this photo of me from the picnic bench.

Touring the Island

Categories: Photos, Porter, Alice, J, Sarah, Friends, Trips — J @ 11:20 am

After we dropped our stuff at the campground, it was almost time to take a tour of the island on the tramcar bus that circles the island. So we hightailed it back to the visitor center for our tour. It took a lot less time to get back because without all our gear we could take the shortcut.

We had the tram stop at the turn to go back down to the visitor center so we wouldn’t have to walk quite as far back to our campsite.

Hike to Camp Reynolds

Categories: Photos, Alice, Friends — J @ 9:03 am

While we waiting for our camp to empty so we could set up our tents and drop our gear, we waited in a picnic area above the campground. From there it was a short hike over the crest to Camp Reynolds on the west end of the island. Porter quit the hike almost as soon as we began, so Sarah took him back to the picnic area. Suzanne, Sam and Alice continued with me a short while longer, but then Alice unceremoniously started back for camp and the rest followed. So I continued along around Point Stuart from where I had some great views of San Francisco and the bay.

Suzanne, Sam and Alice before they headed back and left me alone on the hike.

A kind of purple lupin that was common on the island.

I’m not sure who built this small labyrinth, but it was pretty cool all the same.
