About Us

Welcome to the Brookston family blog. We'll post updates here on what's going on in our part of the world, and especially with our son, Porter, who has been diagnosed with some form of autism. Our hope is that this blog will help us deal with all the issues we'll be facing and keep our friends and family informed as well.

Monkey Girl in Space

The other day Alice was playing with Porter’s Curious George rocketship.

Alice and the rocketship.

Which she was very excited to be playing with, I guess because Porter wasn’t trying to take it from her for a change.

Food Follies

Cue the Benny Hill music, here’s the kids eating at the table.

Ummmm, beans!

These are yummy, I can fit the whole fork in my mouth!

Yeah, yeah. Fork, chicken, ketchup. Been there, done that. So what?

Table? I don’t need no stinkin’ table!

The Next Jackson Pollock

Jackson Pollock is one of those modern artists that when people see his work they say “I could do that.” Well, here’s your chance. The Jackson Pollock Art Generator by Miltos Manetas lets you drip paint on your own canvas just like Pollock would have done.

This is my effort, my own Pollock-esque painting.

Life Size Pachinko

Categories: Photos, Porter — J @ 10:10 am

Also at the Carson City Kids’ Museum was what can best be described as a life-sized pachinko machine. It was the hit of the day for Porter, and he spent the last half-hour we were there on it.

Porter pulling levers and turning dials on the giant pachinko machine.

Then he’d stand back and watch the balls fall where they might.

Carson City Children’s Museum

Categories: Photos, Porter, Alice — J @ 9:37 am

After we visited the Railroad Museum in Carson City when we in Lake Tahoe over Memorial weekend, we went to the Carson City Childre’s Museum. We had picked up a local alternative paper which listed it as being just down the road from the railroad. And it was included with our Bay Area Discovery museum membership, so it was free for us to go there. It wasn’t quite as grand as the Marin one, but the kids had fun anyway.
