About Us

Welcome to the Brookston family blog. We'll post updates here on what's going on in our part of the world, and especially with our son, Porter, who has been diagnosed with some form of autism. Our hope is that this blog will help us deal with all the issues we'll be facing and keep our friends and family informed as well.

Jays by Jay

Categories: Photos, J, Art — J @ 1:40 pm

I have always loved Jays, especially blue jays. But they’re not native to California so I’ve had to contend myself with Stellar’s Jays, the closest jays that are native here. With my new zoom, I managed to capture quite a few good shots of jays during our recent trip to Lake Tahoe. The first four were taken Saturday in the snow while the last four were shot at the mis0named Eagle Lake at the end of our hike on Sunday.

Sunnier Sunday

Categories: Photos, Porter, Alice, Sarah, Trips — J @ 10:33 am

The following day, Sunday, found the weather absolutely perfectly clear and sunny, so we returned to the spot where it had been snowing on Saturday afternoon.

The lake in sunshine.

But Porter just wanted to play with his trains, in fact all he wanted to do was go ride the train again. He was very unhappy we said “no.

So he pretended to sleep on the bench.

Alice and Sarah admired the view.

And what a view it was, a riverboat steams by the island.

Tahoe Weather Contrasts

Categories: J, Trips — J @ 7:30 am

When we left Carson City we continued driving around the lake heading south. When we reached due south there was a lookout point and we stopped to stretch our legs. The view was of the only island in Lake Tahoe. But while we were there, it disappeared in the fog and driving snow that showed up suddenly.

Suddenly snowy.

A Stellar’s Jay braces against the wind and snow.

But then we drove less than five minutes around the lake and lo and behold it was sunny! This is the same island viewed from the other side, but now we could actually see it.

A riverboat on the lake.

A close-up of the island.

A nearby waterfall.
