About Us

Welcome to the Brookston family blog. We'll post updates here on what's going on in our part of the world, and especially with our son, Porter, who has been diagnosed with some form of autism. Our hope is that this blog will help us deal with all the issues we'll be facing and keep our friends and family informed as well.

Marin County Fair 2006

Categories: Photos, Porter, Alice, Sarah — J @ 11:00 am

Sunday we went to the Marin County Fair — which Porter kept calling “the Circus” — and he had definite plans on what he wanted to do. 1. Trains, 2. Ferris Wheel, 3. Bumper Cars. He told us this plan over and over again. T.J. and his family were going to join us at the fair but sadly he got sick the night before and they weren’t able to come. But we managed to have a good time though Porter was initially unhappy that T.J. wasn’t coming.

The big ferris wheel. Porter kept talking about it since he saw it the week before the fair opened. But he never did go on it.

Porter reluctantly wore his hat.

Alice wore hers, too.

Porter showing how trains couple in front of a display for SMART, the proposed Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit. It’s a 75-mile rail line that would link Cloverdale and the Larkspur Landing ferry terminal with fourteen stations in between, primarily for commuters. It would be great for Sarah’s commute. It certainly sounds like a terrific idea so undoubtedly for that reason it’s probably doomed to failure.

Richmond Freight Yard

Categories: Photos, Porter — J @ 7:59 am

Sarah’s folks have been taking Porter to a frieght yard in nearby Richmond. I’m not sure exactly what it is, but it’s near the refineries there so I imagine oil is involved — although Porter is convinced that all those tank cars are filled with milk. Porter talked about “going to the freight yards” so much that even I’ve taken him a couple of times. It’s certainly cheap entertainment and Porter gets absolutely delirious, especially whenever we see a diesel engine. Lately, he’s considering steam engines as slow and old while diesel engines have become the stars. It’s quite amazing how many of them he knows on sight. The last time we went, I took some photos.

Several diesel engines, including an orange BNSF, in the middle of the yard.

Another blue and yellow Santa Fe BNSF by itself.
