About Us

Welcome to the Brookston family blog. We'll post updates here on what's going on in our part of the world, and especially with our son, Porter, who has been diagnosed with some form of autism. Our hope is that this blog will help us deal with all the issues we'll be facing and keep our friends and family informed as well.

The Green Hammock

Categories: Photos, Porter — J @ 3:54 pm

Cyndi and Dave had a green hammock at the campsite on Saturday that Porter was just fascinated with. For a while there, he didn’t want to get out of it.

Porter in the green hammock.

I’m not getting out of this hammock.

No more pictures, please.

Dirty Girl

Categories: Photos, Alice — J @ 2:01 pm

Alice has often reminded us of Pigpen, from Peanuts Cartoons, as she loves getting dirty, especially anything involving water, dirt or — best of all — both. Even after we got back from the playing in the mud down by the river on Saturday, Alice still wasn’t finished getting dirty, not by a long shot.

Alice at her most savage, covered in dirt.

Our own wild child.

Miller Creek Park Again

Categories: Photos, Porter, Alice — J @ 1:02 pm

These are just some more random photos from our trip o Miller Creek Park on Friday.

Alice goes a’froggin.

Porter on his new favorite playground item, the sit-and-spin downward thingy. Does it have an actual name? Beats me.

Alice found a pencil.

Monday Morning Motivational #49

Categories: Humor — J @ 11:59 am

A real magazine (by that I mean, not a beer mag) asked me to edit down one of my 5,000-word rants from the beer blog into a 1,000-word article to run in their — I think — September issue. It’s a Libertarian magazine called Reason. They’ve been around since 1968. It was actually great fun working with a real editor and we went back and forth honing the article into shape. I even did a phone interview and sent a headshot for their Contributors section. They made a lot of great changes, forcing me to confront how much I still need to learn to be a better professional writer, which is the reason — pun intended — for this week’s words of wisdom.

Sliding with Mom

Categories: Photos, Porter, Sarah — J @ 9:20 am

Friday afternoon I took Sarah and the kids for a little drive on my new wheels and we ended up at Miller Creek Park, where Sarah went down the slide.

Hanging around the slide, getting into position.

Snuggled up with Mom and ready to go.

And aw-aaaay we go ….
