About Us

Welcome to the Brookston family blog. We'll post updates here on what's going on in our part of the world, and especially with our son, Porter, who has been diagnosed with some form of autism. Our hope is that this blog will help us deal with all the issues we'll be facing and keep our friends and family informed as well.

Hall Monitoring

Categories: Alice — J @ 4:52 pm

Alice has been outgrowing the swing lately, and several times as it was time for her morning nap, she’s pointed to the bed and said “I want ….” Generally, it’s been going okay putting her to bed by herself for her nap. I think before today, I was 2-1, meaning twice it worked and the third time not so well. So today she wanted to try it again and it seemed to be going fine. She was quite right away and when I checked on her fifteen or so minutes later she was in fact asleep.

But an hour later when I went upstairs to take my shower at 11, she was not in her bed! Having not her a peep out of her on the monitor, I was perplexed to say the least. So I went on an Alice hunt. She wasn’t in Porter’s room. She wasn’t on our bed or the bathroom. But then I discovered where she was and she was in such an open place that I walked by her twice, I was so surprised to find her there.

I found Alice sleeping peacefully in the hall next to the stairs leading upstairs, in front of the gate to go to the rarely used top floor. There were towels from swimming over the banister, which is why I didn’t see her when I came up the stairs.

Maybe she’s part cat, sleeping in the sun?

Dude, Where’s My Brother

Categories: Photos, Alice — J @ 9:31 am

I don’t know if it was the black t-shirt or the fact that she’d just woken up from a nap, but Alice looked like Ashton Kutcher in Dude, Where’s My Car? while we were out on the sidewalk waiting for Porter’s schoolbus to drop him off.

Dude, where’s my brother?

Sweet, here it comes!

Radio Flyer Engine No. 9

Categories: Photos, Porter — J @ 7:32 am

These were actually take a few days ago, but around the same time of the morning as now. Sarah’s parents got Alice this little fire engine toy, but Porter frequently steals it from her, like this particular morning.

Porter riding Engine No. 9

He let the slope of our parking lot take him almost into the wall.

But he managed to stop and turn before impact.
