About Us

Welcome to the Brookston family blog. We'll post updates here on what's going on in our part of the world, and especially with our son, Porter, who has been diagnosed with some form of autism. Our hope is that this blog will help us deal with all the issues we'll be facing and keep our friends and family informed as well.

Extreme Survival

Categories: Info, Humor — J @ 1:18 pm

Do you know what to do in an extreme emergency situation or will you be badly maimed like me. I got only 9 out of the 17 questions correct in this Extreme Survival Quiz that Sarah sent to me. See if you’re more of a survivor than I am.

  2. 13/17, so better off than you guys.

I would have done better, though, if it weren’t for their totally incorrect answers regarding the shark attack. I checked the ISAF (International Shark Attack File) web site, the top authority on the subject, and they never mention anything about eye gouging or “staring it down”.

  3. 10 out of 17 - but I sure hope I never come face to face with a shark!

  4. I got 11 out of 17. But I think that it gave me the last few as the answers that I chose were that last options in the answers given. So I just want to let everyone know not to depend on me in an emergency, unless your emergency is that you need your skateboard fixed quickly.

  5. 10 out of 17… I think the punching the shark was a total set-up. Didn’t someguy recently survive an attack by doing just that??? I’m alive but badly maimed and stewing in my inability to survive a snake bite. I’m staying in the city!

  6. and hey….no questions about what to do if there’s a landslide and your arm is pinned under a large boulder and all you have is a swiss army knife….oh but wait then you”d still be maimed

  7. I got 13 out of 17, although I dispute a couple they called incorrect. I, like Kit, disagree about the staring a shark down. You aren’t going to fool a shark that you’re dead, but moving around in the water is going to trigger a prey response, so passive floating is still a good idea. I don’t think sharks are susceptible to mammalian dominance displays.

Also, on the agressive dog - yes, running away and eye contact are bad ideas. But most experts will tell you to ‘feed’ an object to an attacking dog - a jacket, a backpack, a bike, whatever - to keep the dog away from you in the first place.

So I’m maimed by a dog and dying of dehydration in the desert. With water still in my canteen.
