About Us

Welcome to the Brookston family blog. We'll post updates here on what's going on in our part of the world, and especially with our son, Porter, who has been diagnosed with some form of autism. Our hope is that this blog will help us deal with all the issues we'll be facing and keep our friends and family informed as well.

First Playdate Set

Categories: News, Porter, Autism — J @ 4:27 pm

I spoke with Porter’s classmate’s mom today and we’ve scheduled a playdate at the Bay Area Discovery Museum for this Friday. I figured starting a playdate on neutral ground was probably best. So T.J. and Porter will get their first chance to play together outside of school. I’m looking forward to seeing how it goes. Look for a report late Friday.

  1. Hello
I am a peripatologist, psychologist, and the parent of an
hfa/asperger 14 year old son, Amos.
Congradulations on the playdate. I know the feeling.
That first invitation to a birthday party, play time,
    movie, etc.
What I did was cultivate relationships with parents
whose children would probably not be invited elsewhere.
My son’s “best friends” are a downs teen, a bi-polar teen, a blind/autistic teen, and two others on the PDD spectrum.
We just had our second annual
New Year’s Eve party—cosmic bowling, movies, food, and
    of course,NOISE MAKERS.
The parents of the other children are so grateful.
Amos is the child who sees other special needs kids
from school while we are at the grocery store and runs to
greet them. The parents have told me that he is the only
child from school who does this, and they love the
chance for their child to have a”normal” encounter
    in public.
Only two of the best friends are in our district. The
others we have met through EFECT, KCRC, and the blind
one was one of my students.
    Write to me any time.
    mje
